As Carvana scaled its nationwide online vehicle platform, legal workload grew across contracts, financings, and product development. Manual document handling, outside-counsel dependencies, and fragmented knowledge slowed turnaround and created consistency risk. The legal team needed an operation that could scale as fast as the business.
Carvana’s Legal Department led a Harvey implementation as part of a broader AI strategy, starting with a 19-person pilot and expanding to more than 70 professionals across Legal, Government Affairs, Real Estate, Financial Reporting, and Investor Relations. The team built playbooks and workflows in Harvey—including Harvey for Word—integrated with Microsoft and iManage to connect precedent, drafting, and review. Twenty-six templates were converted into logic-driven playbooks that deliver mid-level-associate-quality issue spotting and first drafts in minutes.
Harvey for Word playbooks produced an 80% reduction in drafting and review time, with 4–6 hours of outside counsel work eliminated per matter. Carvana estimates each lawyer now reclaims 7–10 hours every week for advising and strategy. Attorneys use Harvey for first-pass drafting, redlining, comparisons, and research while focusing judgment on negotiations and deal strategy.
