The Challenge

As a global law firm, Clifford Chance needed to expand generative AI use across all roles without compromising client confidentiality, professional standards, or legal compliance. Deployment alone was insufficient: the firm required safe, secure, and pervasive adoption supported by clear principles, governance, and firm-wide skills.

The Solution

During FY24, Clifford Chance deployed Microsoft Copilot for M365, Microsoft Viva Suite, Microsoft Teams Premium, and its private secured tool Clifford Chance Assist on Microsoft Azure OpenAI, with firm-wide access. It introduced AI Principles and a Policy framework, an AI & Innovation Board, practice-area AI Steering Groups, mandatory eLearning plus 12 generative AI modules, and Tech Hubs for hands-on support.

Results

By the end of April 2024, the firm reported more than 60% daily adoption of the generative AI tools. Steering Groups identified 400+ AI use cases for policy review and prioritisation. The London Tech Hub logged 1,675 visits between its 20 March 2024 launch and 30 April 2024.

Key Takeaways

    • Firm-wide generative AI value depends as much on principles, governance, and training as on tool rollout.
    • Local Tech Hubs and role-diverse steering groups help turn policy into day-to-day responsible usage.
    • Embedding AI skills in continuous professional development supports competent use and supervision across career stages.
