QNC GmbH wanted to launch a low-cost, flat-rate legal advice subscription for small businesses in Germany, but conventional keyword search tools made lawyer research too slow to keep the service commercially viable. Lawyers needed a faster way to match new client questions against QNC's database of over 180,000 previously answered legal questions while still assuring accuracy.
QNC implemented IBM Watson Knowledge Studio and IBM Watson Discovery to power its new Prime Legal "digital law firm" subscription service, launched in July 2017. A team of lawyers and technical staff trained Watson on legal case pattern recognition so contracted lawyers could quickly surface the closest-matching prior answers in the Prime Legal database instead of researching each case from scratch.
Watson-powered search cut legal research time by 40% compared to traditional methods, letting lawyers typically complete research in 10-15 minutes and respond to client inquiries in under an hour. The efficiency gains made the EUR 80/month flat-rate subscription commercially viable, and Prime Legal grew to over 60 client logins per hour with more than 1,000 lawyers in Germany providing services through the QNC network.
