Singapore's legal sector faces a structural skills gap: junior lawyers are expected to contribute immediately upon entering practice, yet traditional academic training leaves them underprepared in critical soft skills — negotiation, handling difficult witnesses, and therapeutic communication for family law disputes. At the same time, senior lawyers lack scalable tools to mentor juniors effectively, compounding the gap. As Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon noted in April 2025, GenAI tools have in some cases outperformed lawyers in document analysis, raising the stakes for practitioners to upskill rapidly. Without structured, repeatable practice mechanisms, the profession risks widening the competency divide between emerging and established lawyers.
The Singapore Academy of Law (SAL) partnered with Frontiermind to develop a GenAI application built around an interactive avatar capable of simulating real legal scenarios. The app delivers three distinct learning modules: Strategic Negotiation, Handling Difficult Witnesses, and Therapeutic Justice — the last designed specifically to help family lawyers de-escalate tense disputes using precise, calibrated language. Built on conversational AI technology, the platform allows lawyers to practice scenarios repeatedly at their own pace, receiving feedback and earning a passing grade independently without employer involvement or administrative oversight. The self-contained design means participation is private, removing the professional risk of demonstrating weakness in front of colleagues or supervisors. SAL is additionally exploring GenAI to improve senior-to-junior mentorship pipelines.
The GenAI avatar platform enabled lawyers to complete skill modules entirely on their own schedule, with no dependency on employer sign-off or peer observation — a meaningful barrier removed for self-directed professional development. Key outcomes include:
